Chapter 3
“On the living room carpet, Sirocco—the one who was always so full of energy—lay like a marathon runner after crossing the finish line.
"You know, Aeolus, my stomach thinks someone has slit my throat and is screaming for help, but I... I don’t even have the strength to eat.’
‘How so, kiddo? Where did you go to put up those posters?’
‘Everyyywhere! Miss Remi is on every pole... twice.’
‘What do you mean? How am I on there twice?"
’‘On one side, the successful writer who went missing, and on the other, the purebred Angora cat that was found...
"Mon Dieu! Someone pinch me!’ Mistral felt exhausted himself, even though he hadn't left the house. After the humans had left to glue the posters, the furballs remaining at home tried to make use of the writer’s cell phone... but it had run out of battery. Now, another ‘mission impossible’ was needed to charge the phone without the grown-ups noticing, and without it being detected. Who would have thought life could be so tiring?
‘I suggest we sleep now and act tonight!’ Aeolus panted, after making sure the phone was safe, plugged into an outlet right behind the sofa.
‘The best thing would be to occupy the sofa strategically so no one gets near the phone. Remi, you’re so fluffy, stay on the backrest; we’ll stay by the armrests.
’‘Do you think they even feel like sitting on the sofa, Mistral?’
‘Shhh! Anemo is talking to someone on the phone.’
In the kitchen, the three ladies, worried sick, were pretending to have tea, but each was lost in her own world while Anemo had taken off his shoes to pace from one end of the kitchen to the other, talking on the phone.
"Yes, Dad! I’ve already been there. I checked. No, they don’t know anything either. Reporters? Do you think...’‘
At least mr Trench and the Tuftted one are gone,’ Mistral thought out loud.
From outside, noises began to be heard—a bustle of honks, deep voices, and high-pitched ones. It seemed that in Sirocco’s mind, a battle had just been fought between exhaustion and curiosity; he peeled himself off the carpet, jumped onto the windowsill, and began to follow the ‘street show.’
‘I think the porters are here, Mistral. Is that a good thing or a bad thing?
’‘Ce n'est pas possible! Remi, we must do something, absolutely! You have to send a message to someone, somehow, to get us out of this whole situation! It’s like we’re under siege!’
Mistral began to pace agitatedly from one end of the living room to the other, as if infected by the habits of the owner who was always barefoot."
‘Aeolus, check the battery! We don’t need a hundred percent, just enough to send the message and then we’ll turn it off.
’‘We have fifty...’ Aeolus answered from behind the sofa.
‘Remi, be ready! Sirocco, watch our six!"
"Me? Our six?’ Sirocco looked confused. ‘I... I’m smaller, I can watch our three at most. Look at me, Aeolus... I’m learning more and more every day, but I haven’t reached a six yet.
’‘Kiddo, don’t be... Aeolus is telling you to keep an eye on the humans so they don’t jeopardize the mission!
’‘Oh, I see! No one will "leopardize" the mission.’”
